Student Wins TCL Dorm Makeover

Brittany Williams - September 9, 2015

Jessica Carter is like most of the student population at the UofA. She came to college a few hours from home to gain a higher education, she loves the Hogs and uses social media in her spare time.

She saw that TCL, one of fastest growing electronics companies in North America, was hosting dorm makeovers around the country and its next stop was at the UofA. “I was just scrolling through Facebook … I wasn’t going to sign up, but I saw how easy it was,” Carter said.

To enter into the contest, she simply had to like TCL’s Facebook page, comment her favorite color of one their Roku TVs with a hashtag. She took a chance, entered TCL’s contest and won a dorm makeover and a pink TCL 3850 series Roku TV.

“I was walking to the library and I got the notification that TCL commented on the photo … I clicked on it and it said in all caps ‘Jessica Carter won’ ... I called my parents freaking out,” the freshman special education major said.

“I got a completely new bedspread, white with flowers on it and lots of bright pink … a nice, comfy chair with lots of pillows, a new blue rug and a new blue curtain to go over my closet,” she said of her new room.

Her mother, Monica Carter, drove from their hometown of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, to see her new room.“We were excited, because we kinda threw her room together. So, it was neat for her to get a makeover,” the homemaker and die-hard Hogs fan said. They did a great job, Monica Carter said. “I think it would make her feel good after a long day of class to come in and relax in her chair,” she continued. “It’s bright and cheery.”

What TCL did not tell Jessica Carter immediately after winning was that a famous UA alum was also going to be there. Tyler Wilson, former quarterback for the Razorback football team and current co-host of ESPN Radio’s  "The Morning Rush," came to surprise Jessica Carter and the other Razorbacks Wednesday.

“I’m glad I got to be here,” Wilson said. “I don’t think they’d trust my opinion on the makeover, but I did hang the curtain. Jessica Carter’s navy blue curtain, like other products used in the makeover, was purchased at Walmart. TCL also gave four lucky students one of their Roku TVs through a scavenger hunt giveaway with Wilson.

TCL had Wilson pose for Instagram pictures set in different campus locations like Old Main Lawn and the Phi Beta Phi Centennial Gate. The four students who found Wilson each received a TCL Roku TV.

The electronics company did not leave everyone else out of the fun. TCL offers a ten percent discount for those in the UA community who purchases one of the company’s 3850 series TVs on Amazon.com with the code GOHOGS2015. These TVs can also be purchased in store or online at major retailers like Walmart, Best Buy and Sam’s Club.

With a few clicks on the remote, TCL’s 3850 series Roku TV makes streaming shows and movies from Hulu, Netflix and over 2,000 other streaming channels as accessible as ESPN or HBO is on cable.

Now that the “Netflix and Chill” phenomenon is in full effect, and cozy, fall weather is approaching, parents everywhere may agree with Monica Carter’s advice to her daughter. “Just keep going to class, keep studying and don’t watch the tv too much,” she said.
